House Collapses and Swept Away by Sta. Rita Dam Floodwaters in Lubao, Pampanga

LUBAO, Pampanga — A family home collapsed and was completely swept away on Friday as intense floodwaters rushed from the Sta. Rita Dam in Lubao, Pampanga, leaving local communities on high alert as heavy rains continue to swell waterways across the region.

The dramatic destruction occurred following days of heavy, continuous rainfall that forced water levels at the Sta. Rita Dam to rise sharply. The sudden surge triggered a rapid overflow into neighboring river systems, sending powerful currents rushing through low-lying residential areas along the riverbanks.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment the rising water undermined the foundation of the concrete-and-wood structure. As the ground gave way, the house cracked open before collapsing into the torrent and floating downstream within seconds. Fortunately, the occupants were able to evacuate moments before the structural failure after hearing warning shouts from neighbors and local disaster officials.

Local emergency response teams, including the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), immediately deployed crews to assist with further evacuations along the dangerous riverbank zone. Authorities have cordoned off high-risk sectors and warned residents living along the path of the Sta. Rita Dam overflow to seek immediate safety in designated evacuation centers.

Emergency management officials continue to monitor water release levels at the dam and surrounding river basins. With additional rain forecasted over the coming days, local government units in Pampanga are urging all communities near waterways to remain vigilant, pack emergency supply kits, and obey mandatory evacuation orders.

In response to the growing displacement, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has begun distributing relief packs containing food, clean water, and hygiene kits to affected families temporarily sheltered in local schools and barangay halls. Meanwhile, provincial engineers are inspecting vulnerable riverbanks and drainage channels to reinforce eroded embankments, aiming to prevent further structural collapses while heavy rainfall persists throughout the province.
