Hot lahar floods from Mount Semeru reached residential areas in Sumber Langsep, located in Jugosari Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang, on Saturday. The flow carried volcanic material, sand, and mud into homes situated near the river channel.
Local authorities reported that the sudden surge was triggered by rainfall in the upper slopes of Mount Semeru, causing volcanic deposits to collapse and move downstream. Several houses were flooded, and access routes to parts of the hamlet were temporarily cut off due to thick volcanic debris.
Emergency teams from the Lumajang disaster management agency were deployed to assess damage and ensure the safety of residents. Officials stated that no casualties had been reported, though residents were urged to remain alert due to the possibility of additional lahar flows.
The incident follows a series of similar lahar floods reported throughout the year, highlighting the ongoing risks for communities living near rivers connected to Mount Semeru’s drainage system. Authorities continue to coordinate monitoring efforts and have advised residents to avoid riverbanks during periods of heavy rain.
