Hostage Situation At Beirut Bank Ends In Violent Standoff, Police Storm Building, Suspect Detained

Beirut, Lebanon— A hostage situation at a commercial bank in Beirut ended in a violent standoff at 2:30 p.m. on October 30, 2026, after a depositor armed with a rifle held staff and customers for four hours demanding his frozen savings.

The incident occurred at a branch of Banque Libano-Française in Hamra. The man, a 42-year-old former contractor, entered with a hunting rifle and claimed he needed $38,000 for his mother’s surgery. He locked the doors and held seven people, including two tellers and a security guard.

Negotiators from the Internal Security Forces arrived within 30 minutes. They spoke through the glass. The man demanded immediate access to his dollar account, which has been restricted since Lebanon’s 2019 financial collapse. Banks have imposed informal capital controls, leaving depositors unable to withdraw their money.

“He was shouting that he has no other way,” said a customer who escaped before the doors locked. “He said his money is there but the bank will not give it.”

L’Orient-Le Jour reported similar hostage-style protests have happened before in Beirut, often ending peacefully after partial payouts. This time talks stalled. At 2:15 p.m., the man fired a shot into the ceiling. Police decided to storm.

Special forces entered from the rear entrance. They disarmed the man after a brief struggle. No hostages were physically injured, but several were treated for shock. The rifle was unloaded and seized. The branch windows were shattered during entry.

Lebanon’s banking crisis has left millions unable to access savings. The state has failed to pass a formal capital control law or a restructuring plan. Desperate depositors have resorted to holdups to get their own funds. Most cases have not led to jail time.

“We understand the despair, but we cannot allow armed actions inside banks,” said ISF spokesman Joseph Moussallem. “We are handling the suspect according to law while also noting his humanitarian claim.”

Tonight the branch remains closed and under guard. The suspect is in custody at Hobeish police station. The hostages have been released to families. The bank said it will review the case.
