Horror on the Expressway: 5 Dead in Violent Truck-Car Crash on Badagry Highway

LAGOS, Nigeria — A tragic road crash along the busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway claimed the lives of five people on Friday evening, August 21, 2026, after a heavy-duty commercial truck collided head-on with a private passenger vehicle.

The deadly incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. near the Agemowo axis along the international corridor. According to eyewitnesses and traffic officials, the driver of a fully laden tipper truck lost control of the vehicle while traveling at high speed, veering across the center median into oncoming traffic and crushing an oncoming sedan.

The sheer force of the collision completely demolished the passenger car, trapping all occupants inside the mangled wreckage. First responders from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived promptly at the scene to initiate extraction efforts using heavy mechanical cutters.

Emergency officials confirmed that five individuals—three men and two women—sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews transported the remains of the victims to the mortuary at Badagry General Hospital for formal identification and autopsy.

Traffic along the busy highway ground to a halt for several hours as recovery teams cleared the debris and towed the damaged vehicles off the main carriageway. Preliminary investigations by the FRSC suggest that excessive speeding combined with a mechanical brake failure on the truck may have caused the fatal crash.

Local community leaders and motorist associations expressed outrage following the incident, reiterating calls for stricter enforcement of speed limits, mandatory vehicle fitness tests for heavy vehicles, and improved street lighting along the Badagry road network to prevent further carnage.

Following the tragedy, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC directed an immediate safety audit along the Agemowo-Badagry stretch to identify critical hazards and recommend structural road improvements. Meanwhile, transport union officials have pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement, launching an internal review to enforce stricter vehicle maintenance compliance and driver safety training across all commercial haulage fleets operating on the corridor.
