HILL COUNTY, Texas — A devastating head-on collision on a Central Texas highway left six people dead, including two young children, on Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2026. The violent, two-vehicle crash triggered an intense blaze that completely engulfed both automobiles.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the horrific accident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. on State Highway 171 near Farm-to-Market Road 3155, a rural stretch of road located between the small towns of Bynum and Malone.
A preliminary investigation by state troopers indicates that a Nissan passenger vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 171 when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle. The Nissan veered into the oncoming lane but failed to clear the maneuver in time, striking an approaching Ford van head-on.
The force of the high-speed impact caused an immediate, catastrophic fire. Both the Nissan and the Ford van were quickly swallowed by flames.
Emergency responders and fire crews from Bynum, Penelope, and Hillsboro rushed to the scene alongside CareFlite medical choppers. Despite their rapid deployment, the fire proved deadly for almost all of the occupants.
Four people inside the Ford van—two adults and two children—tragically died at the scene. A third child riding in the van managed to survive the initial impact and was extricated before the vehicle was entirely consumed. The surviving child was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries that authorities have classified as non-life-threatening.
Both occupants inside the Nissan passenger car were also killed in the collision, bringing the total death toll to six.
As of Sunday, state highway patrol officers and local crash investigators remained on-scene working to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the disaster.
The identities of the six deceased victims are currently being withheld by state authorities pending formal identification by the medical examiner and the notification of next of kin. DPS officials noted that the investigation is active and ongoing.
