SABRATHA — A devastating traffic accident involving three passenger cars and a heavy transport truck on the coastal highway in the Telil area of Sabratha left five people dead and dozens of others injured on Wednesday. The high-impact collision caused widespread disruption along one of western Libya's primary coastal thoroughfares.
The incident unfolded along the busy coastal road in the Telil district, near Sabratha. According to initial traffic reports and local authorities, three civilian cars and a large truck collided violently, resulting in extensive damage to all vehicles involved.
Emergency medical teams, traffic police, and civil defense units rushed to the crash site to secure the area, pull victims from the wreckage, and manage traffic flow along the congested corridor.
Emergency responders confirmed that five individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Dozens of passengers sustained varying degrees of trauma, ranging from minor fractures to severe injuries. Ambulances transported the injured to nearby medical centers and Sabratha Teaching Hospital for emergency care. Hospital staffs were placed on high alert to handle the sudden influx of critical patients.
Local law enforcement and traffic department officials have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary assessments point to factors such as high speed and heavy traffic conditions along the coastal road, though authorities are continuing to examine vehicle conditions and road safety measures at the site.
In the wake of the tragedy, local residents and motorists have voiced growing concerns over safety conditions along the heavily traveled coastal highway. Community members highlighted that the stretch through the Telil area frequently experiences heavy commercial freight alongside high-speed commuter traffic, creating persistent hazards during peak hours.
To address public outcry, municipal leaders have urged the Ministry of Transportation and regional road safety authorities to implement immediate infrastructure upgrades. Proposed measures include installing additional speed monitoring cameras, enhancing street lighting, and establishing clearer lane dividers along high-risk segments of the highway to prevent future multi-vehicle collisions.
