SAHARANPUR, INDIA — A devastating road accident on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has claimed the lives of four family members after their car was rammed by a speeding SUV while reversing on the high-speed corridor.
The horrific collision occurred near the Halgoya Cut in the Rampur Maniharan area of Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district.
The victims, residents of Bahadurgarh in Haryana, were traveling toward Haridwar for a religious pilgrimage and a holy dip in the Ganga River. The tragedy unfolded when the driver of the family's car overshot the designated exit cut.
CCTV footage captured by highway surveillance cameras shows the family's vehicle attempting to reverse back toward the missed exit on an under-construction stretch of the highway. Moments later, a fast-moving Mahindra Scorpio SUV coming from behind slammed into the reversing car with immense force.
"The impact was so severe that the car was dragged several meters and completely mangled, while the Scorpio lost control and overturned."
The violent crash instantly killed four members of the family. The deceased have been identified as Praveen (40), his wife Preeti (37), his elderly mother Sudesh, and his nine-year-old nephew Shivansh.
Three other passengers in the vehicle sustained severe injuries. Passersby and fellow motorists rushed to rescue those trapped in the wreckage and alerted local authorities. Emergency services quickly transported the injured to the Trauma Centre at the district hospital, where doctors report their conditions are currently stable.
Senior administrative and police officials, including District Magistrate Arvind Kumar Chauhan and Senior Superintendent of Police Abhinandan, visited the hospital to oversee the medical response and ensure the survivors receive proper treatment.
The Saharanpur Police have launched a formal probe into the accident and have preserved the highway's CCTV footage as a key component of the investigation. A case has been registered, and authorities are reviewing all technical aspects of the crash—including the speed of the SUV and the actions of both drivers—to determine exact accountability.
