BRISBANE, Australia — A worker is fighting for their life in a Brisbane hospital following a horror industrial accident on Friday morning, September 4, 2026 when a forklift burst into flames at a busy shipping container yard.
Emergency services were called to the commercial facility on Anton Road in Hemmant, situated in Brisbane’s eastern industrial corridor, around 10:50 a.m. local time. Crews arrived to find a severe fire rapidly spreading through the site, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the air above the container stacks.
According to local authorities, a total of five people were hospitalized as a result of the blaze. One victim suffered critical, life-threatening burns to their head, face, and chest and was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a precarious condition. A second worker sustained severe burn injuries to their arms, while three additional workers were treated for smoke inhalation.
More than 100 workers across the shipping terminal and adjacent industrial sites were evacuated as emergency crews established a safety perimeter.
Queensland Ambulance Service dispatched seven crews to the scene, while the Queensland Fire Department deployed multiple firefighting units to isolate the blaze.
The fire proved particularly difficult to contain due to the layout of the yard and the nature of the machinery involved. Industrial forklifts carry significant amounts of hydraulic oils and lubricants, which fueled the initial burn. The flames quickly jumped from the forklift to nearby stacked refrigerated shipping containers, ignition of which generated dense smoke due to their thick internal wall insulation.
Fire crews managed to stop the fire from spreading further across the terminal by Friday afternoon, though units remained on-site for several hours monitoring dangerous hotspots among the stacked containers.
The precise cause of the forklift fire has not yet been confirmed. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors have launched a formal investigation alongside local fire investigators to determine whether a mechanical failure, fuel line leak, or electrical fault triggered the sudden blaze.
Representatives for the site praised the rapid response of on-site staff who attempted to contain the fire before emergency services arrived. Authorities expect the site to remain partially cordoned off as forensic and safety teams complete their investigation.
