Hong Kong authorities checking for “banned books” shipped from Taiwan, says Taiwanese official

Hong Kong authorities are checking shipments of books delivered from Taiwan for “banned books” with a potentially broad scope, a Taiwanese official said. Liang Wen-chieh, of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, said Hong Kong has not published a definitive list of prohibited titles, so publishers can only assess risk case by case. His remarks came after Hong Kong national security police raided independent bookstores and arrested five operators for alleged sedition. Taiwanese media also reported some logistics firms telling clients they would not ship “prohibited books” to Hong Kong.
