Home Depot in LA Installs Noise Machines that ‘Penetrate Bones’ to Deter Day Laborers

In an alarming attempt to discourage day laborers from congregating, Home Depot has installed high-pitched noise machines in its Los Angeles parking lots. Home Depot in LA Installs Noise Machines that ‘Penetrate Bones’ to Deter Day Laborers

Recent reports highlight Home Depot's controversial decision to install sound-emitting machines in its Cypress Park location, aiming to discourage day laborers from using the parking lot as an informal hiring space. The machines produce a high frequency noise that many describe as excruciating, likened to a "sonic ice pick."

Day laborers, who have frequented the lot for over two decades, have expressed their discomfort, stating that the sound feels harmful and invasive. "It’s like something enters my ear, and that it can possibly be harming it," commented one laborer. The distress caused by the noise is so intense that some workers have found it necessary to leave the area altogether.

The installation of these so-called "anti-loitering" machines has intensified existing tensions, especially following increased ICE raids in Home Depot parking lots. The Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA) has condemned the noise devices, arguing that they are part of a broader pattern of corporate indifference toward vulnerable workers.

During a press conference called to oppose the machines, the sounds were temporarily silenced, but workers reported that the devices were reactivated shortly after. This strategy fits a troubling trend where commercial property owners employ similar tactics to push marginalized groups out of public spaces.

With a growing number of protests and community outcry, the future of these noise machines remains uncertain. Day laborers and advocates alike demand a stop to what they see as an oppressive method aimed at erasing their presence and denying them a place to find work, highlighting a need for compassion and understanding in dealing with vulnerable populations.
