Historic Building Facade Falls In Bruges Storm, Crushes Passing Pedestrian, Leaves One Dead

Bruges, Belgium— A structural facade collapse during heavy gales in Bruges on October 24, 2026 crushed a passing pedestrian and killed the person instantly on the sidewalk.

Winds were gusting over 90 km/h by mid-morning. The building, a three-story mixed-use property on a narrow street near Sint-Jakobsstraat, had scaffolding on one side from a renovation that was paused for the storm. The front facing, made of brick and stone trim, gave way.

Masonry fell in one sheet. A section about four meters wide dropped from the second and third floors. The pedestrian, who was walking alone, was caught directly beneath it. Bystanders said there was no time to shout a warning. The sound was like a truck hitting the street.

Fire crews and an ambulance arrived within eight minutes. They lifted debris with airbags and shoring, but the victim had suffered catastrophic injuries. A doctor pronounced the person dead at the scene. Police have not released the name pending family notification.

The city closed the street and two adjacent alleys. Building control officers ordered an immediate check of the remaining facade. A structural engineer was hoisted by crane to test the anchors. Loose bricks were removed by hand to prevent a second fall.

A city spokeswoman said, "We issued a wind warning early this morning and asked owners of scaffolds and loose facades to secure their sites. This building had a history of water infiltration that weakened mortar."

The property owner told inspectors the facade had shown cracks for months. A contractor had recommended repointing and replacement of corroded wall ties. Work was scheduled for November. The city will review whether an emergency order should have been issued earlier.

Bruges has many historic facades with stone details that are vulnerable to wind-driven rain and freeze-thaw cycles. Heritage officials said they will audit other buildings with known defects along the same street. The wind is expected to ease overnight.

The prosecutor opened a file for involuntary manslaughter to examine maintenance liability. The sidewalk remains sealed with concrete blocks while debris is cleared and tested.
