KATHMANDU, Nepal — Raging torrents triggered by sudden, massive flash flooding swept through mountainous villages in northern Nepal, leaving at least eight people dead and devastating local infrastructures along the border with Tibet. The sudden wall of water slammed into communities, destroying critical bridges, roads, and key hydroelectric energy projects.
The catastrophic flooding primarily devastated high-altitude settlements in the Rasuwa district, including areas near Syapru Besi and Timure. Witnesses described hearing a violent, roar-like sound preceding the sudden influx of mud and water, forcing terrified residents to flee toward higher ground. The disaster also triggered major landslides across the border in Tibet’s Gyirong County, causing additional casualties and cutting off vital transport routes.
The violent swell of the Bhote Koshi River created major hurdles for emergency crews attempting to reach isolated disaster zones. Rising floodwaters grounded army and private rescue helicopters from landing in damaged villages, forcing authorities to establish emergency refueling setups nearby to accelerate relief once water levels drop.
Additionally, Nepal's energy sector sustained heavy damage, with power projects losing over 430 megawatts of capacity—representing more than 12% of the country's national grid output. Local administrators have warned that total property loss and casualties could escalate further as search-and-rescue teams work tirelessly to re-establish communications with remote mountain settlements.
Government leaders and disaster management authorities have instructed security forces to prioritize moving lower-lying communities to safety while emergency crews work around the clock to locate missing individuals and repair damaged links along the Himalayan corridor.
