Highway Tragedy: One Dead, Another Critical After Admitted Drunk-Driving Collision

MANAMA, Bahrain — A harrowing late-night collision on the Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Highway has left one person dead and another fighting for their life, in an incident that has once again sparked calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws in the Kingdom. During a preliminary hearing at the Lower Criminal Court, the defendant—an Asian national—formally admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the fatal crash.

The accident occurred around 2:25 a.m. local time on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 when the defendant’s vehicle, traveling at high speed, reportedly swerved violently across multiple lanes before slamming into another car. The impact was so severe that emergency responders had to use specialized equipment to extract the victims from the wreckage.

The crash claimed the life of a local driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene due to catastrophic injuries. A passenger in the same vehicle was rushed to the Salmaniya Medical Complex in critical condition. Hospital sources indicate the survivor suffered multiple fractures and internal trauma, and remains under intensive care.

The defendant sustained only minor injuries and was detained by traffic police shortly after the incident. Breathalyzer tests conducted at the scene confirmed that his blood-alcohol level was significantly above the legal limit.

In court, the prosecution presented a compelling case using traffic camera footage and witness testimonies to detail the defendant's reckless maneuvers prior to the impact. Faced with this evidence, the driver admitted to all charges, including manslaughter through negligence, driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless driving that resulted in extensive damage to both public and private property.

Under Bahraini law, causing a fatal accident while intoxicated carries severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and heavy fines. The prosecution is pushing for the maximum penalty to serve as a deterrent against "the senseless disregard for human life on our roads."

As one of Bahrain’s busiest arterial roads, the Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Highway has become the focal point of a reignited debate over road safety following this tragedy. Traffic advocates are urgently calling for increased radar surveillance and patrols to combat the high-speed "lane hopping" that contributed to the disaster.

Simultaneously, community leaders are pushing for more rigorous DUI enforcement, specifically urging for frequent random checkpoints during high-risk late-night and weekend hours.

The presiding judge has remanded the defendant in custody, with the next hearing scheduled for later this month to hear final arguments before sentencing.
