Highway Terror: Bus Catches Fire Along Busy Mumbai-Pune Expressway

MUMBAI — Passengers aboard a private travel bus experienced a harrowing ordeal on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway when a sudden fire broke out and quickly engulfed the vehicle in the Pune-bound lane.

The incident occurred during peak transit hours near the Khandala ghat section. According to initial reports, the driver noticed smoke pouring from the engine compartment and immediately pulled over to the hard shoulder, shouting for passengers to evacuate.

The blaze spread with alarming speed, consuming the interior of the bus within minutes. Dozens of passengers scrambled out of the emergency exits and narrow doors, leaving behind luggage and personal belongings in a frantic bid for safety.

Passersby and motorists stopped along the highway to assist fleeing commuters, helping shepherd families away from the burning vehicle as intense heat and thick black smoke drifted across the busy roadway.

"We smelled burning rubber, and within seconds the floor became hot. The driver acted fast and told everyone to run. If we had delayed by even a minute, it would have been catastrophic," said one shaken survivor.

Highway safety patrols, local police, and fire tenders were dispatched immediately to the scene. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly an hour before fully extinguishing the charred shell of the bus.

While no fatalities or severe injuries were reported, emergency medical personnel treated several passengers at the scene for mild smoke inhalation and shock. Traffic along the Pune-bound stretch was temporarily brought to a standstill, causing several kilometers of gridlock before authorities cleared the wreckage and reopened lanes.

An official investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched, with preliminary findings pointing toward a possible mechanical failure or short circuit in the engine bay.

Following the incident, transport authorities announced plans to enforce stricter mandatory safety audits for long-distance private buses operating along high-speed corridors. Regional transport offices have been directed to conduct immediate spot checks on vehicle fire extinguishers, emergency exit compliance, and engine maintenance logs to prevent similar near-fatal accidents.
