Highway Crash Outside Bratislava: Passenger Bus Hits Lorry, Eight Injured, Emergency Crews Rush to Free Passengers

Bratislava, Slovakia— Eight commuters were injured after a passenger bus collided with a lorry on a highway near Bratislava on October 22, 2026.

The crash happened at 7:25 a.m. on the D2 highway near Jarovce, just outside the capital, a busy corridor for cross-border commuters. The bus, carrying 24 passengers to Bratislava, was in the right lane when a lorry ahead braked hard for congestion. The bus could not stop in time and struck the rear of the trailer at moderate speed.

The front of the bus crumpled, windshield shattered, and passengers were thrown forward. Seats broke loose. Luggage scattered. The lorry was pushed 20 meters forward, its rear axle damaged. Both vehicles came to rest on the hard shoulder, leaking coolant and oil.

Motorists called 112 immediately. Highway police, fire crews and four ambulances arrived in 12 minutes. They found eight injured inside the bus, including a driver with chest injuries and seven passengers with fractures, cuts and whiplash. Two were trapped by deformed seats and had to be cut free.

“People were screaming and trying to get out through the back door. The driver was pinned by the steering wheel,” said a passenger who escaped with minor bruises. “The bus braked hard, then everything flew.”

The injured were taken to hospitals in Bratislava and Petržalka. One is listed as serious with a broken leg and rib injuries. Seven are stable. The remaining passengers were taken by replacement bus and offered trauma support.

Police closed the D2 outbound for two hours. The queue stretched 7 kilometers back to the Austrian border crossing at Kittsee, affecting international freight. Tow trucks removed both vehicles by 10 a.m. Road crews swept diesel and glass.

Preliminary findings point to late braking and insufficient distance in dense morning traffic. The bus’s tachograph and dashcam have been seized. Both drivers tested negative for alcohol. The lorry driver was uninjured.

The highway reopened fully before noon. The transport company said the bus passed inspection in September. The investigation remains open.
