Casablanca, Morocco— Four people died and ten were injured when a multi-vehicle crash tore through the northbound lanes of the highway near Casablanca at around 8:15 a.m. on November 1, 2026.
The collision involved a passenger bus, two private cars, and a light truck, according to initial reports from the Royal Gendarmerie. The impact crushed one car and pushed the truck into the median barrier. Traffic stopped. Smoke rose from the wreckage.
Emergency teams arrived within minutes. Civil protection units cut open two vehicles to free trapped passengers. The injured were taken to hospitals in Casablanca and Mohammedia. Doctors said three are in critical condition. The dead were pronounced at the scene.
The highway is a key freight and commuter corridor. It carries heavy truck traffic between Casablanca and Rabat. Saturday morning volume was already high. The crash blocked three lanes for nearly four hours. A detour was set up through a secondary road.
"The collision was violent. Braking marks were visible over 50 meters," a gendarmerie traffic officer at the scene said. "We are reviewing speed and following distance."
Authorities pointed to a chain reaction. One vehicle reportedly slowed abruptly. Others behind could not stop in time. Low sun glare may have reduced visibility. The investigation will include mechanical inspections and driver testimony.
MAP News reported that the Ministry of Transport dispatched an inspector to the site. Morocco has seen a steady rise in highway fatalities this year. Officials have pledged tighter enforcement of speed limits and rest rules for commercial drivers.
Families gathered at the hospital gate waiting for names. Officials said identification would take time. The prosecutor's office ordered an autopsy and a full accident report. Tow trucks cleared the last wreckage after midday.
Traffic resumed slowly. The gendarmerie said the highway remained under observation.
