Highway Chaos in Hong Kong: 5 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash Near Lai King MTR Station

HONG KONG — A multi-vehicle collision involving a taxi and three private cars near the Lai King MTR station on Monday morning, August 17, 2026 left five people injured and caused significant traffic disruptions along a major commuting corridor.

The pile-up occurred during peak morning hours along the Kwai Chung Road flyover southbound, close to the transit hub. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving multiple frantic calls from passing motorists.

According to initial police reports, the chain-reaction collision unfolded when traffic abruptly slowed down along the busy arterial route. A private car was reportedly forced to brake suddenly, causing a trailing taxi and two following private vehicles to slam into one another sequentially.

The impact severely damaged the front and rear bumpers of the vehicles involved, leaving debris strewn across two southbound lanes.

"The vehicles were traveling in close proximity during the morning rush. When the lead vehicle slowed down, the following cars were unable to stop in time, resulting in a multi-car impact."— Hong Kong Police Force Traffic Representative

First responders arrived swiftly to extract passengers and clear the thoroughfare. Paramedics treated five individuals at the scene—including two drivers and three passengers—for minor cuts, neck strains, and contusions before transporting all five conscious victims to Princess Margaret Hospital for further medical evaluation.

The incident triggered major traffic gridlock as police officers temporarily cordoned off two lanes of the Kwai Chung Road flyover toward Kowloon, causing bumper-to-bumper delays that backed up several kilometers toward Tsing Yi and Kwai Fong. Tow trucks cleared the damaged vehicles within an hour to allow lanes to reopen, while traffic investigators continue to review dash cam footage from the vehicles involved to confirm the precise sequence of events.

By late morning, transport officials reported that traffic flow along Kwai Chung Road had fully normalized, though drivers were advised to remain cautious as intermittent rain made road conditions slick. The Hong Kong Police Force subsequently issued a public safety reminder, urging motorists to maintain safe tailgating distances during peak travel hours to prevent similar multi-vehicle pile-ups in high-density corridors.
