Bogotá, Colombia— A highway bus overturned near Bogotá on November 1, 2026, killing four passengers and injuring 14 others after the driver apparently lost control on a steep mountain curve.
The bus was traveling from Villavicencio toward the capital. It carried 32 passengers. The road, known as the Bogotá-Villavicencio highway, is notorious for tight curves, fog, and landslides. Around 9 a.m., the bus veered off the lane, hit a guardrail, and rolled onto its side.
Emergency services arrived within 30 minutes. Firefighters cut through windows to reach trapped passengers. Four people were dead inside. Fourteen were taken to hospitals in Cáqueza and Bogotá with broken bones and head injuries. Several were in serious condition.
"There were people screaming inside. The bus was on its side and fuel was leaking. We had to act fast," a fire officer said at the crash site. He said rescue was complicated by steep terrain and light rain.
The Bogotá-Villavicencio highway carries heavy truck and bus traffic and has a history of deadly crashes. Transport authorities have spent years trying to stabilize slopes and widen tunnels. Brake failure and driver fatigue have been cited in past accidents.
Police said they are investigating whether mechanical failure played a role. The bus, operated by a regional company, had passed technical inspection in September, according to preliminary records. The driver survived and is under observation at a hospital.
Survivors said the bus was moving fast downhill and began to sway. One passenger said he heard a loud bang before the overturn, possibly a tire blowout. Another said luggage fell from racks and blocked the aisle.
Colombia's Transport Ministry said it will audit the bus company's fleet. Officials said 14 injured passengers remain hospitalized, three in intensive care. Family members gathered at hospitals seeking information.
The highway was partially closed for six hours as cranes righted the bus and debris was cleared. Investigators photographed skid marks stretching 40 meters. The bus will be towed for mechanical inspection.
The road reopened late Saturday afternoon. Police asked drivers to reduce speed and use engine braking on downhill sections.
