High Winds Topple Power Pole onto Pasay City Home, Triggering Outages

PASAY CITY, Philippines — Severe weather and sudden, violent gusts of wind caused an aging utility pole to collapse directly onto a residential property in Barangay 184, Pasay City, damaging the structure and threatening electricity supply across the immediate community. The incident occurred near St. Peter at PAL Gate 2, where localized squalls destabilized the concrete utility structure carrying two transformers.

The impact occurred when residents heard a loud crashing sound during peak winds. Local officials dispatched to inspect the area discovered that an old Meralco-owned electrical post had snapped and crashed onto a nearby home. The collapse pulled down active high-voltage overhead lines, exposing the surrounding street to severe electrical hazards.

Emergency responders cordoned off the affected area around PAL Gate 2 to prevent casualties among pedestrians and motorists. Local barangay leadership advised roughly 500 households, as well as nearby municipal offices, to shut off their main circuit breakers to prevent secondary fires or equipment damage from power surges while utility crews worked to secure live cables.

Barangay 184 Captain Julie Barrameda made a public appeal to electric distributor Meralco for swift intervention to isolate the power lines and replace the destroyed infrastructure. Highlighting the dangers of live wires resting on residential properties, local leaders urged utility companies to accelerate emergency response protocols during unexpected severe weather events.

Meralco dispatch teams and local disaster risk management personnel remain on-site to stabilize the area, clear fallen equipment, and begin restoring electrical service to the affected corridor.

The collapse in Barangay 184 highlights the ongoing vulnerability of Metro Manila’s densely populated neighborhoods to sudden severe weather. Aging wooden and concrete utility posts, heavy transformer loads, and tangled overhead wiring frequently pose acute hazards during localized downbursts, raising long-standing concerns over structural maintenance across municipal districts.

In the wake of recurring infrastructure failures during bad weather, urban planners and civic groups have renewed calls for utility providers to accelerate the undergrounding of power cables and prioritize structural audits of older poles. Transitioning to subterranean distribution networks or reinforced utility lines remains a critical step to mitigate public safety risks, reduce widespread blackouts, and strengthen the capital’s resilience against severe weather events.
