BEND, Ore. — A devastating tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School ended after an armed community member intervened, shooting and killing a 16-year-old gunman who had opened fire inside the facility, leaving three young students and a teacher dead.
The attack unfolded during school hours when the teenage suspect forced entry by shooting through locked security doors with a long gun. The victims killed in the assault were identified as three children—aged 5, 8, and 11—and a 54-year-old teacher. Two additional victims, a 7-year-old student and another teacher, suffered critical injuries and remain hospitalized.
The rampage was halted when an armed civilian followed the teenage gunman into the school compound and confronted him. During the engagement, the bystander fatally shot the attacker, neutralizing the threat before arriving law enforcement officers entered the building.
"All Oregonians mourn this loss today. This is a horrible day. No parent should have to have this kind of day," said Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, who publicly acknowledged the bystander's actions and commended the emergency response.
Following the incident, police officers conducted classroom-by-classroom evacuations to safely reunite students with their families at a designated staging center. The Bend-La Pine School District subsequently announced the cancellation of all classes and extracurricular activities.
Local law enforcement agencies and federal partners have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the suspect's motive and how the 16-year-old acquired the long gun used in the attack.
As the community of Bend comes to grips with the unimaginable loss, local faith leaders have organized candlelight vigils across the city to honor the victims and support grieving families. Counselors and trauma response teams have been deployed to area schools to provide grief support to students and staff grappling with the emotional aftermath of the violence.
In the wake of the tragedy, local and state officials are facing renewed calls to address school security measures and youth access to firearms. Lawmakers announced plans for an emergency legislative session focused on evaluating campus protection standards and exploring expanded intervention programs for troubled youth before incidents escalate to violence.
