Pontianak, Indonesia— Rescue teams found the wreckage of a helicopter that crashed in West Kalimantan on Friday, confirming all eight people on board were dead.
The aircraft had been reported missing earlier in the day after losing contact with air traffic control. It was flying over dense forest terrain when contact dropped. A search was launched within hours.
Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Basarnas, said the helicopter was located in a remote, heavily wooded area. The terrain made access difficult. Ground teams had to cut through jungle to reach the site.
No survivors were found. The victims include crew and passengers, though officials have not released a manifest. Bodies were recovered from the crash site and taken to a hospital in Pontianak for identification.
"We found the aircraft completely destroyed by impact and fire," a Basarnas official said. "The location is extremely remote. Our teams worked through difficult conditions to reach it."
The cause of the crash is not known. Weather in the area was reported as cloudy with low visibility at the time. Investigators from the Transportation Ministry and the National Transportation Safety Committee are en route.
Local residents said they heard a loud sound around the time the aircraft disappeared. One village head said his residents saw smoke rising from the forest. Police sealed the area to preserve evidence.
The helicopter was operating a charter flight, according to early reports. Its operator has not been publicly named pending family notification. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it will examine flight logs and maintenance records.
The wreckage remains under guard. Investigators plan to airlift key components out once documentation is complete.
