Helen Haines Attacked Outside Victoria Office in Suspected Vehicle Assault, Left Critical, Security Tightened

Wangaratta, Australia— Independent federal lawmaker Helen Haines was left in critical condition on the morning of October 20 after a vehicle was deliberately driven at her outside her electorate office in northeastern Victoria.

Victoria Police said the attack occurred at 9:05 a.m. outside the Indi electorate office on Rowan Street, Wangaratta. Haines, 65, had just arrived for a constituency meeting and was standing on the footpath near the office entrance when a white Toyota Hilux mounted the curb and struck her, pinning her against a brick wall before reversing and fleeing. A staffer witnessed the impact.

Paramedics arrived within eight minutes. Haines suffered severe chest and leg injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. The hospital said late this afternoon she remains in critical but stable condition in intensive care. A second staffer suffered minor injuries while trying to pull her clear.

Bloomberg reported police are treating the incident as a targeted political attack. The vehicle, later found abandoned and burned out 12 kilometers north of Wangaratta, had been reported stolen from Albury two days earlier. Detectives from the Counter Terrorism and Security Intelligence Division have joined the investigation. A senior detective said, "The manner of driving, the timing, the location — this was not an accident. Someone intended to kill a sitting member of parliament."

Haines has represented Indi as an independent since 2019, succeeding Cathy McGowan. She is known for her work on anti-corruption and regional health policy. She had not reported any recent direct threats, though her office had received abusive mail over the past month related to climate legislation, according to staff.

The attack shocked a region where political offices are typically open and unguarded. The electorate office has no bollards or security barrier, only a low fence. Prime Minister said in a statement, "This is an attack on our democracy. Helen Haines is a respected colleague and her service is valued. We wish her a full recovery."

Leaders across the spectrum condemned the assault. The Speaker of the House said security reviews will be conducted for all regional electorate offices. The Australian Federal Police said it will increase patrols around independent and regional MPs this week.

Police released CCTV stills of a man in dark clothing and cap leaving the burned vehicle. They appealed for dashcam footage from Rowan Street between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. No arrests have been made.

Haines remains under police guard in hospital. The office is closed and cordoned off.
