Heavy Snowstorm Triggers Avalanche In French Alps, Burying Trail, Closing Resort Across Savoie Mountain Range

Val d Isere, France— Snow came fast and heavy, then the mountain moved. On the night of October 28, 2026, a huge snowstorm crossed the French Alps, dumping up to 1.5 meters of fresh powder in 48 hours with high winds, according to Meteo-France and Alpine reports. By October 29, a large avalanche broke on a resort trail above Val d Isere, burying part of the piste and forcing a full closure of lifts across Savoie.

The avalanche risk was at 5 out of 5. That rating is reserved for the most extreme conditions. Meteo-France placed Hautes-Alpes, Isere, Savoie and Haute-Savoie under orange alerts and maximum avalanche vigilance. The US Embassy on October 28 warned Americans of extremely dangerous avalanche conditions across Europe, citing strong or very strong risk along the French-Italian-Swiss border.

In Val d Isere and Tignes, ski patrols found two people lucky to be recovered after being buried. In a separate early-season incident near Alpe d Huez on October 22, three ski tourers on the Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves glacier were caught, one carried 150 meters down. Le Figaro and Reuters noted that heavy early snow plus wind creates unstable slabs that fail with little trigger.

"We have not seen avalanche rescue on October 22 in years, this is very early," said a ski patroller quoted by PlanetSKI. Resort managers in La Plagne and Les Arcs took the drastic step to close entirely for the day, canceling half-term holidays for families who had arrived early for glacier training. Lifts stayed shut. Piste machines could not operate safely.

The storm was part of a cold air push arriving October 31, according to ECMWF and DWD models, that will drop the snow line to 1,000 meters in parts of Austria and Switzerland. In Savoie, nearly 1.8 meters fell within 36 hours in some stations, a record for late October. That sudden load destabilized slopes above villages and roads. The departmental prefecture closed two access roads below the avalanche path.

The friction is economic and safety-driven. Resorts want to open early for revenue, but a category 5 warning means no off-piste, no touring, and limited in-bounds. In February 2026, the avalanche death toll across Europe neared 100, with 28 in France alone. Officials do not want a repeat in October. Insurance and liability force closures even when tourists demand skiing.

By October 30, 2026, search operations had ended on the Val d Isere trail. No bodies were reported under the debris, but patrols were probing with dogs. Meteo-France said temperatures would warm slightly before the next cold pulse, increasing wet-slide risk. The resort said lifts would remain closed until the slabs stabilize.

The next storm was already on the charts.
