Heavy Casualties in Katsina: Security Forces Neutralize 40 Terrorists as 5 Hunters Fall in Battle

KATSINA, Nigeria — A fierce firefight erupted in Nigeria's northwestern Katsina State as a combined force of local security assets successfully repelled a large-scale assault. State authorities confirmed that over 40 heavily armed bandits were neutralized during the intense clash, though five brave local hunters tragically lost their lives defending the community.

The violence unfolded on Sunday evening, July 26, 2026 when an estimated 200 heavily armed terrorists descended on Guga Village, located in the Bakori Local Government Area. According to intelligence gathered by the Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, the assault was an orchestrated reprisal attack spearheaded by the notorious bandit kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki. Aiki’s faction was heavily reinforced by criminal fighters linked to the infamous Ado Aleru syndicate operating out of neighboring Zamfara State.

The heavily armed network targeted the village with the explicit strategic intent to dislodge the local hunters and operatives of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC). Intelligence reports indicate that after crushing the community's frontline defenders, the terrorists planned to sweep into the major commercial town of Bakori and surrounding villages.

The state's proactive intelligence network enabled joint forces—comprising local hunters, KSCWC personnel, and reinforcements from the Nigerian Army's 17 Brigade—to rapidly deploy and intercept the advancing terror cell.

A brutal gun battle ensued. The volume of fire and coordinated positioning of the joint forces ultimately forced the 200-strong terrorist group to retreat into the bush after sustaining staggering losses. Post-battle assessments confirmed that more than 40 bandits were killed on the battlefield.

Follow-up intelligence further revealed that approximately eight senior commanders of the criminal network were among the dead, including Iliya Mai Rasha, a notorious commander responsible for various deadly raids across Zamfara State. Kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki himself was reported to have sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds during the encounter.

However, the victory came at a painful price for the defenders. While the frontline operational parameters held firm, five members of the local hunters' group were tragically ambushed and fatally shot by the fleeing attackers when they were caught outside their primary tactical positions.

Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, expressed the government's profound grief over the fallen hunters, hailing them as courageous patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice for their people.

This victory closely follows a prior July 7 encounter at Dawan Laila Village where the same criminal network suffered heavy losses, indicating a desperate attempt by the bandits to regain lost ground and disrupt the newly established community-based security framework.

Military and community watch corps forces have immediately commenced aggressive clearance operations throughout the forest fringes of the Bakori area to track the wounded remnants of the bandit group and recover the massive cache of weapons and equipment abandoned during their retreat. Normalcy has reportedly returned to Guga, with heightened surveillance keeping the peace.
