Head-On Collision On Rural Road Outside Charleroi Kills Three People, Leaves Wreckage Scattered

Charleroi, Belgium— A head-on collision between two cars on a rural road outside Charleroi on October 24, 2026 left three people dead and shut the road for most of the day.

The crash happened on the N-series road between Charleroi and Thuin, a two-lane stretch with no central divider and a history of overtaking accidents. Police said one car crossed into the opposite lane on a slight bend. The other had no time to swerve.

Both vehicles were traveling at an estimated 90 km/h. The impact pushed both front ends into the passenger compartments. Airbags deployed, but intrusion was severe. Fire crews needed hydraulic cutters to reach the occupants. Two died inside one car, one in the other.

A fourth occupant was taken to Grand Hôpital de Charleroi with serious injuries. Paramedics said the person was conscious but had chest trauma and leg fractures. No other vehicles were involved. The road surface was wet from morning rain.

Police closed the road at both ends and set up a detour through neighboring villages. The federal traffic police mapped the scene with drones and measured braking traces. A prosecutor's traffic expert was called to calculate speed and angle.

A local officer said, "This is a straight-looking road that tricks drivers. People overtake here to save a minute. We have asked for rumble strips for two years." Residents said they heard the impact from nearby farms.

One of the cars was registered in France, the other in Hainaut province. The victims included a 24-year-old driver, a 51-year-old woman, and a 68-year-old man. Families were notified by police and victim support teams at the station, not at the roadside.

The mayor of the nearby commune said the road had seen three fatal crashes in the past 18 months. The Walloon mobility service said a safety audit was planned for December but will now be moved forward.

The vehicles were towed for technical inspection. Blood samples were taken as routine for toxicology, though police said there was no initial sign of alcohol. The road reopened after debris and fluids were cleared.
