He Was the Family’s Patriarch; He Killed Them

There are crimes that resist comprehension, that leave behind not only grief but a profound disorientation—a sense that the world has tilted in a way that cannot be righted. The shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday evening belongs to that category. A forty-five-year-old man, described by family as a grandfather and patriarch, opened fire inside a home on Perry Street, killing eight people, including a pregnant woman and two young children, before taking his own life . Among the dead was a one-year-old girl named Amarianna, whose father, Julius Windham, stood outside the home on Sunday, wearing a T-shirt bearing the faces of those he had lost.

What makes this tragedy particularly difficult to process is not only the number of lives taken but the relationships between them. Seven of the eight victims were relatives of the shooter, identified by authorities as Matthew Stone Sr. . The victims included his family members across three generations: Michelle Stone, 44; Angelina Stone, 24, who was due to give birth on the day the coroner released her name; Jonathan Stone, 19; Matthew Stone, 21; a five-year-old boy; and the one-year-old toddler, Amarianna . Two women who lived at other addresses, Lora Roberts and Twila Tanner, were also killed outside the home after arriving and knocking on the door seeking help .

The sequence of events, as reconstructed by police from video and audio evidence, unfolded with a chilling clarity. Shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, gunshots were heard from inside the home. Two women arrived, appearing distressed, and began pounding on the door. The gunman came outside and shot them as they ran toward him, then returned indoors . When officers arrived and entered the home, they found the bodies of the five-year-old boy and one-year-old girl on the first floor; two more women and two young men in a stairwell; and the shooter on the second floor, dead of an apparent self-inflicted wound .

For Julius Windham, the loss is compounded by its inexplicability. He described the gunman as someone who “never seemed distressed or out of the ordinary,” a man who smiled and seemed unremarkable in his daily interactions . “Him every day, him smiling and being just — you would think of nothing like that would happen,” Windham said . The shooter was, by all accounts available, a figure of ordinary presence in the family’s life. Whatever lay beneath that surface, if anything, remains unknown.

Investigators have not established a motive. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah declined to discuss possible reasons but suggested mental health could have been a factor, noting that investigators would examine the cellphones of the women killed outside and speak with relatives . “They knew something was going on at that house,” Lorah said of the two women. “We have to figure out what that is” . The suggestion is that there were signals, perhaps, that something was amiss—signals that arrived too late.

Friends of the family have described a household that seemed loving and unremarkable. Nicole and Debra Eller, whose best friend was among the victims, said they had known the family for more than thirty years. Nicole Eller said the shooter “was a good guy, and then he started going downhill with everything” . Debra Eller asked the question that has no answer: “They were a lovely family. Who would have thought this would ever happen?” .

Erie Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the victims’ families directly at a news conference, her words carrying the weight of a community’s helplessness in the face of such loss. “I am so deeply sorry,” she said. “What happened to you was horrific, and there is nothing that any of us can say today that will make this any easier” . Outside the home, mourners placed candles, flowers, and stuffed animals—small tokens of remembrance for lives that ended in a way that defies understanding.

The shooting has been compared to the 1982 massacre in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where a man killed thirteen people, including five of his own children . The echo is disturbing, a reminder that the patterns of violence that shock communities are not new, and that the questions they raise—about mental health, about family, about the warning signs we miss—are ones we have not learned to answer.
