Port-au-Prince, Haiti— Two civilians were killed by stray bullets during a gang clash in a Port-au-Prince suburb on October 16, 2026, and the shooting forced an entire block to stay indoors for hours. They were not involved. They were inside their homes.
The clash erupted in the morning between rival groups fighting for control of access roads north of the capital. Automatic rifle fire was heard across at least three neighborhoods. Residents reported bursts lasting several minutes, then pauses, then bursts again. Police did not enter immediately.
Local sources identified the victims as a man and a woman, both struck while sheltering. One was hit near a window. The other was hit in a courtyard. A community clinic confirmed receiving the bodies and said two other people were treated for panic and minor injuries from debris. No gang casualties were officially confirmed.
A Haitian National Police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak, said, "Two groups exchanged fire. Civilians were hit by stray projectiles. We cannot yet secure the zone fully." He said armored vehicles were positioned at the perimeter but did not advance.
This suburb has become a corridor. Gangs extort transport trucks, control water points, and tax market stalls. When truces break, crossfire kills whoever is closest. Families sleep on floors. Children miss school. Businesses close early.
The Le Nouvelliste report noted that schools in the immediate area suspended classes and that a public tap was shut after a bullet hit a cistern. A resident told local radio, "We heard the shooting and lay down. The bullets go through walls. We have no protection."
International agencies have warned that Port-au-Prince's metropolitan area remains fragmented by more than 200 armed groups. The Multinational Security Support mission has not established a permanent presence in this particular commune. Patrols are sporadic.
By afternoon, gunfire had thinned but had not stopped. Residents were still unable to collect the bodies for burial. No arrests were announced.
The families of the two dead are now trying to move them out of the neighborhood. The road remains contested. Police say they will attempt recovery when conditions allow.
