Hacker Group Claims Attack on Taliban Defence Ministry Website

A hacker group known as Afghan Dragons says it has taken the Taliban Defence Ministry’s website offline, describing the action as a protest against what it calls the Taliban’s suppression of protesters in Afghanistan—especially the detention of women in Herat.

Afghan Dragons told Afghanistan International that it did not want to carry out cyberattacks inside Afghanistan, but said Taliban policies forced the group to take action. The group linked its move to recent Taliban actions in Herat, including detentions of women and suppression of peaceful protests by residents who opposed harassment of women.

At the time of the report, the Defence Ministry’s website was inaccessible, and the ministry had not issued any response.

The report also notes that Afghan Dragons previously launched cyberattacks that reportedly took nearly all websites belonging to Taliban-run ministries offline. It contrasts that activity with another hacker collective, TalibLeaks, which in recent years has targeted databases of institutions under Taliban control and published documents online.
