Guyana Ferry Disaster: 27 Confirmed Dead, 83 Missing in Brazen Ocean Capsize

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA — A massive multinational search-and-rescue operation is underway off the coast of Guyana after an aging passenger ferry capsized over the weekend. The maritime disaster has left at least 27 people dead and 83 others missing, plunging the small South American nation into mourning.

The vessel, the MV Barima, overturned late on Saturday night, July 18, 2026 while journeying from the capital, Georgetown, toward Port Kaituma in the country's inland Essequibo region.

Of those on board, 69 survivors have been pulled from the ocean so far. However, no new survivors have been located since the initial rescue window, raising fears that the death toll will continue to climb.

In a desperate bid to locate the remaining 83 missing passengers, authorities dramatically expanded the grid search area from 400 to 1,070 square kilometers (154 to 413 square miles). Local fishermen have joined emergency response teams, and international aid has arrived from neighboring French Guiana, which deployed 12 military divers, two doctors, and a mechanic to assist in the operations.

"Our focus again is on finding people," Prime Minister Mark Phillips told reporters on Monday. "We still have hope."

As families await news, a severe criminal investigation has been launched into the operations of the ill-fated vessel. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill revealed that the ferry's captain and at least one other crew member tested positive for cannabis following their rescue.

The captain and several crew members have been taken into police custody as investigators look into allegations of gross negligence.

"We have zero tolerance for members of the crew drinking or smoking while at work. And for us to have positive tests from the captain… this is serious," Minister Edghill stated during a press conference, accusing the operators of trying to "cheat the system."

The investigation is also focusing on how many people were actually aboard the aging, 131-foot vessel, which was originally built in 1939.

While the ferry's official paperwork and passenger manifest only listed 133 people, Prime Minister Phillips stated that authorities are now "confident" the actual number of people on board was 179, indicating that dozens of passengers may have been unbooked or unaccounted for when the ship set sail.

The ship sent out its final distress call roughly eight hours into its journey as it moved along the coast before it was scheduled to turn inland through the dense rainforest waterways.
