JOS, NIGERIA — Security concerns in Plateau State escalated following coordinated attacks by gunmen on the Toul and Halle communities in Mangu Local Government Area on the night of November 1, 2026. The violence, which began around 9:00 p.m., resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left five others seriously injured.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants struck both villages simultaneously, opening fire on unsuspecting residents. Despite an active government-enforced curfew aimed at curbing violence in the region, the attackers operated with apparent impunity. Local reports suggest that the gunmen were able to navigate the area without hindrance, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the curfew measures.
In Toul, one resident was killed, and four others sustained critical injuries during the assault. Meanwhile, in Halle, another resident lost their life, and one individual was severely injured. Gabriel Titus, a local resident, expressed disbelief at the audacity of the attackers, stating, "The gunmen came into the community and opened fire on the people. One surprising thing about these attacks in Mangu is that the killers were able to move around despite the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by the state."
In response to the violence, military units from Operation Enduring Peace were deployed to restore order in the affected areas. Security forces evacuated the injured victims to Nanreth Hospital in Mangu for emergency medical attention. Tragically, one of the severely wounded individuals later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment.
The recent attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges faced by rural communities in Plateau State's Middle Belt region. These areas have been plagued by communal clashes and targeted raids, which have resulted in the displacement of families and disruption of livelihoods. Community leaders and residents are increasingly vocal in their demands for the Plateau State Government and federal security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering, enforce curfews more strictly, and deploy additional personnel to prevent future attacks.
As the situation develops, local authorities are intensifying patrols and initiating offensive operations to track down the assailants and secure surrounding settlements. The community remains on high alert as they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic incident, hoping for improved security measures to protect their lives and property.
