Chicago, United States— Police cruisers blocked two intersections before 9 p.m. on October 30, 2026 after gunfire from a moving vehicle hit a group standing outside a convenience store on the South Side.
The shooting happened when the store was busy. Witnesses told officers a dark sedan slowed near the curb and someone inside opened fire. The car kept moving west. People on the sidewalk dropped or ran into the store.
Chicago police said multiple people were struck. Fire department paramedics set up triage near the entrance. At least four victims were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions were not released late Thursday.
Detectives recovered more than a dozen shell casings from the street and sidewalk. The storefront windows were hit. The parking lot was taped off while evidence technicians worked under floodlights.
"We heard rapid shots and everyone hit the ground," one clerk who was inside told investigators. Another witness said the crowd had been waiting for a food truck that parks on that corner most nights.
Area One detectives are leading the case. Police are pulling security camera footage from the store and two neighboring businesses. No arrests were announced by midnight. A description of the vehicle was broadcast to patrol units across the district.
The block has seen increased patrols this year after prior disturbances. Residents said loitering and late-night traffic are common near that store. Police said they would not discuss a motive and were interviewing victims separately at the hospitals.
Commanders kept the street closed for three hours. Traffic was diverted. The store owner closed early and spoke briefly with officers before leaving.
Investigators said they are asking anyone who was outside before the shots to come forward. The vehicle remained missing and the shooter had not been identified.
