Paris, France— A shooting at an inter-city transit hub in Paris triggered panic at 5:22 p.m. on October 30, 2026, sending travelers running from platforms at Gare de Lyon and forcing police to evacuate the main hall.
The gunfire occurred near Platform 3, where a TGV to Marseille was boarding. Witnesses said a man argued with staff at a ticket gate, then pulled a handgun and fired three times. One passenger was hit in the leg. Another suffered a graze wound. A third was injured in the stampede to the exits.
“It was two bangs, then people screamed and ran,” said Sophie Bernard, a commuter waiting for the Lyon train. “Suitcases were left everywhere. Police shouted to get down.”
Le Monde reported the suspect fled through the RER level toward Rue de Bercy. Armed police from BAC and Sentinelle patrols sealed all entrances within six minutes. The station, which handles 90 million passengers a year, was fully evacuated. Services on Lines 1 and 14 and all mainline departures were halted for 90 minutes.
Forensic teams marked casings near the gate line. CCTV was pulled from 32 cameras. The weapon was not recovered at the scene. Police said the suspect was male, mid-30s, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack.
“We have a clear timeline and images,” said Paris Police Prefect Laurent Nuñez. “We are examining whether this was a targeted dispute that escalated or an indiscriminate act. We do not have evidence at this stage of terrorist motivation.”
France remains on high alert for attacks on transport infrastructure after a series of knife and gun incidents this year. Gare de Lyon itself was the site of a knife attack in February that injured three.
Tonight the station has reopened with heavy patrols. The two shooting victims are stable at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital. The hunt for the gunman continues, with checkpoints on roads leaving the 12th arrondissement.
