Gun Battle Between Rival Cartel Factions Leaves Four Dead, Residents Hide Inside Homes

Apatzingán, Mexico— Four men were left dead in the dirt Saturday morning after rival cartel gunmen fought for nearly an hour on the outskirts of a rural community in Michoacán’s Tierra Caliente, forcing the Army to seal off roads and schools to close. The shooting started shortly before 7 a.m.

Local residents said convoys of pickup trucks carrying armed men entered from two directions near El Alcalde. They carried AR-15s and .50-caliber rifles. The shooting was sustained. It was not a hit. It was a battle for control of the road that links Buenavista to Apatzingán. One resident hid with his family under a concrete table. “The walls shook. My kids thought it was fireworks at first. Then it didn’t stop,” he said.

By the time soldiers from the 43rd Infantry Battalion arrived, the gunmen were gone. They left four bodies, eight burned-out trucks, and hundreds of shell casings. Three of the dead wore tactical vests with no insignia. The fourth was in civilian clothes. The state prosecutor’s office confirmed all four died from gunshot wounds. No bystanders were hit, officials said.

This is familiar ground. The area sits between CJNG and local cells aligned with Los Viagras. They fight over extortion routes, lime groves, and meth labs. Truces last weeks. The Army comes, leaves a patrol, then pulls back. Locals call it the routine. One municipal officer, speaking off record because he is not authorized, said, “We heard them on the radio scanner. They were coordinating like a military unit. We can’t match that.”

Michoacán’s security secretary said federal forces recovered two Barrett rifles, six AK-pattern rifles, and a grenade launcher at the scene. Two vehicles had improvised armor plating. No arrests were made. The official statement claimed the operation “restored order” and that patrols would remain. It did not say for how long.

The state has seen 47 cartel-related homicides in Tierra Caliente this month alone, according to data compiled by Milenio from prosecutor reports. Residents have stopped reporting extortion. They pay. Teachers in nearby schools sent students home early Saturday. Some parents did not come to pick them up until soldiers cleared the road.

An Army captain at the cordon told journalists his unit found a makeshift checkpoint the gunmen had built overnight. “They were taxing everyone who passed,” he said. The checkpoint was dismantled. The wood was still smoking.

For now the road is open but empty. Soldiers stand at both ends. The bodies were taken to Morelia for identification. No group has claimed the attack.
