Guizhou Mine Disaster: Coal Mine Gas Explosion Traps and Kills 8 Miners Underground

Guiyang, China— A coal mine gas explosion in Guizhou province trapped and killed eight miners on October 20, after methane built up in a poorly ventilated shaft and ignited.

The blast occurred at around 2 p.m. in a small private mine near Bijie city. Eight miners were working at the face, about 300 meters underground. Gas monitors, according to preliminary reports, had been disabled. A spark from electrical equipment set off the methane. The shockwave knocked out ventilation and support beams.

Rescue teams from the provincial emergency bureau arrived within an hour. They found the mine entrance filled with smoke and carbon monoxide. Oxygen levels were too low to enter. It took more than five hours to ventilate the shaft. When teams reached the working face, all eight miners were dead. Their bodies were brought out after midnight.

The mine, officials said, had been ordered to suspend operations last month for safety violations. It continued operating at night. Guizhou is one of China's most dangerous coal regions. Small mines with outdated equipment, poor training, and falsified safety logs are common. Methane explosions account for most fatalities.

Family members gathered at the mine gate. Some had worked in the same pit. One said the mine boss told them gas levels were normal. "They told us it was safe," he said. "My brother is gone." Local police have detained the mine owner and the safety manager. Their names have not been released.

Xinhua News Agency said the provincial government has ordered a province-wide safety inspection of all coal mines. Guizhou has more than 200 small mines. Many operate on thin margins. Experts said production quotas push managers to cut corners on ventilation and gas checks. A former mine inspector said, "They turn off the sensors to keep working. Everyone knows."

The National Mine Safety Administration said it will send a team to Guizhou to investigate. The agency said gas levels in the mine were three times the legal limit at the time of the blast, based on preliminary readings. The mine's license will be revoked.

The bodies have been sent for autopsy and will be returned to families. Compensation talks have started. Officials said the mine will be sealed.
