Guatemala City, Guatemala—A store owner and a private security guard were shot dead Friday during an armed robbery at a commercial wholesale business in Zone 11. The attack took place at approximately 11:00 a.m. when three armed individuals forced their way into the establishment demanding cash from the register.
The security guard attempted to draw his service weapon near the entrance but was immediately gunned down by one of the assailants. Hearing the shots, the store owner moved toward the back office before being targeted and shot multiple times by a second gunman.
The perpetrators fled the scene on foot before boarding a getaway vehicle waiting at a nearby intersection. Eyewitnesses reported hearing at least six gunshots before seeing three individuals run out carrying cash boxes and personal belongings.
National Civil Police patrols and municipal emergency teams arrived shortly after receiving calls from neighborhood residents. Paramedics confirmed both men had died inside the store from critical gunshot injuries to the head and torso.
Investigators from the public prosecutor's office arrived to manage the crime scene, collecting ballistic evidence and interviewing witnesses. "We are reviewing commercial surveillance video to identify the vehicle and suspects involved," stated a police spokesperson at the location.
The double homicide led nearby merchants to close their shops early amid growing frustration over violent commercial extortion and robberies in Zone 11. Community leaders called on municipal authorities to deploy additional police patrols across the commercial corridor.
Crime scene investigators recovered handgun shell casings from inside the store entrance and near the main counter. The victims' bodies were transferred to the national institute of forensic sciences for autopsies.
Police units launched search operations in surrounding districts throughout the afternoon to locate the getaway car. No suspects have been taken into custody as of late Friday.
