Groningen Railway Tragedy: Train Collides With Tractor at Rural Crossing, Leaving One Dead

Groningen, Netherlands— A tractor driver was killed around 11:05 a.m. on October 18 when a regional passenger train collided with his farm vehicle at an unguarded railway crossing north of Groningen.

The crossing near Sauwerd has no barriers. Only a crossbuck and a yield sign. The farmer, a 58-year-old local, was crossing with a trailer loaded with beets. The Arriva train heading to Roodeschool struck the tractor at full line speed.

The impact threw the tractor 30 meters into a ditch. The trailer overturned. The train's front carriage derailed slightly but remained upright. Two passengers suffered minor injuries. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I heard the horn, then a bang. You could feel it," a resident who lives 200 meters from the crossing said. "That crossing is dangerous. Farmers use it every day. You cannot see well because of corn."

Police and ProRail investigators closed the line for six hours. They photographed skid marks, measured sight lines, and downloaded the train's event recorder. Early data shows the train driver applied emergency brakes two seconds before impact.

Unguarded crossings remain a persistent risk in the northern Netherlands. Of roughly 100 such crossings still in Groningen province, many serve agricultural land. ProRail has a program to eliminate them, but progress is slow. Farmers say closures force long detours.

Arriva said the train was carrying 40 passengers. Buses replaced trains between Groningen and Roodeschool through the afternoon. The company offered support to its driver, who was reportedly shaken.

The victim's family has been notified. The municipality of Het Hogeland said it will request an urgent review of the crossing with ProRail and local landowners.

Train service resumed at 5:15 p.m. under a temporary speed restriction. The investigation into visibility, signage, and driver actions continues.
