Greece’s Mitsotakis: EU Needs New Tools to Fight Back Against “Weaponized Migration”

Greece’s prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis argues that Europe’s asylum framework is not equipped for situations where migration is “weaponized” to exert geopolitical pressure. Writing for Politico ahead of an extraordinary EU meeting on Ceuta, he said the EU faces a changed security environment in which mass, sudden, and sometimes coordinated arrivals can overwhelm national systems. Mitsotakis called for a dedicated European mechanism that would enable temporary, proportionate, and strictly controlled adjustments to procedures while fully respecting EU and international law.
