Rosario, Argentina— A grain silo exploded at an agricultural distribution hub on the edge of Rosario just after 7 a.m. on October 30, 2026, ripping open a storage tower and sending a column of grain dust and smoke over the Paraná River terminal.
The blast hit Silo 4 at the Cereal Sur complex, a private facility that handles soy and corn for export. Three workers inside the loading gallery were injured. Two were treated for burns. One suffered a leg fracture. The force of it blew out corrugated steel panels and collapsed a conveyor bridge.
“It was a pressure wave first, then fire,” said Marcos Peñalva, a shift supervisor who was 50 meters away. “We could not see anything for two minutes. Just dust.”
Firefighters from Rosario and Villa Gobernador Gálvez arrived within 15 minutes. They found smoldering grain and a secondary dust cloud hanging over the remaining silos. Water was useless at first. Crews had to starve the silo of oxygen and cool the outer walls to stop a chain reaction.
The hub moves nearly 8,000 tons a day during harvest season. All loading stopped. Trucks backed up for three kilometers on Provincial Route 21. Port authority officials closed two berths as a precaution. Inspectors feared structural instability in the adjacent towers.
Clarín reported officials are focused on two triggers. One is suspended grain dust igniting near a bearing that had been running hot. The other is a failure in the dust extraction system that had flagged maintenance requests last week. The company, Agricorp Sur S.A., declined to answer questions on maintenance logs.
“We have sealed the site and secured all operational records,” said Laura Bianchi of the Santa Fe Labor Ministry. “No one enters until structural engineers clear it. The workers’ statements will be taken today.”
Labor unions said they had warned about dust levels at the site in September. A 2025 provincial audit cited the complex for insufficient explosion panels and outdated spark detection. The company said it had completed corrections. Records show the upgrades were only partial.
Tonight the fire is out but the silo still smolders. Heavy cranes are staged at the gate, waiting for clearance. The injured remain at Hospital de Emergencias Clemente Álvarez.
