Gobi Dust Storm Hits China, Triggering Highway Crash, Spiking Pollution, Closing Airports Across Northern Region

Beijing, China— The wall came from the north at midday on October 30, 2026. A massive dust and sandstorm born in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia swept across 12 provinces, enveloping Beijing in yellow haze, spiking PM2.5 to 500 micrograms per cubic meter, and triggering a multi-vehicle pileup on the Gansu expressway that left dozens injured. The China Meteorological Administration issued a yellow alert.

Xinhua said visibility dropped to less than 50 meters on stretches of the G30 and G7 highways. In Henan, China News Service reported up to 30 vehicles involved in a pileup on Sunday during similar conditions, with eight killed and dozens injured. On October 30, traffic was snarled again. Skyscrapers in central Beijing disappeared from sight. More than 400 flights from Beijing's two main airports were canceled before noon during the worst sandstorm in a decade earlier this year, and cancellations resumed.

The air turned dangerous fast. IQAir stations showed Beijing's AQI at 1,093, classified as hazardous. The environmental agency reported small breathable particles at 20 times the safe level. Schools were advised to close, bus service added to reduce exposure. Residents covered faces with masks that did little against the dust.

"The dust was so thick, you could not see the road lines," said a truck driver stranded on the Gansu highway, speaking to CCTV after the pileup. Video from state broadcaster showed a grey wall hitting Zhangye City in Gansu province on Sunday, casting yellow fog across the city. In Linze county, a billowing cloud smothered factories and apartment blocks.

The friction is seasonal and structural. Such storms regularly occur in the dry season when winds blow loose soil from the Gobi into urban areas. But desertification and construction dust add to the load. Northern China has planted shelterbelts for decades, but strong winds still lift topsoil from degraded grasslands. When traffic keeps moving during a yellow alert, pileups follow.

In 2023, at least 32 people were killed in smog-hit road accidents over a weekend when heavy smog and fog shrouded huge swathes of the country. The State Meteorological Bureau issued a health warning then, advising motorists to stay off roads. The same warning was issued October 30.

By late October 30, 2026, the storm was moving southeast toward Shandong and Henan. The National Meteorological Center said dust would affect 12 provinces. Highway police closed sections of the expressway near Jiuquan. Beijing's air remained hazardous, with residents told to stay indoors.

Flights were still grounded. The highway was still blocked.
