Gifu Highway Landslide: Mountain Collapse Traps Four Drivers Inside Cars Amidst Debris

Gifu, Japan—A massive wall of mud and rock smashed across a mountain highway section in Gifu Prefecture on Monday afternoon, burying multiple vehicles and trapping four motorists. Heavy overnight downpours saturated the steep forested slopes until the saturated earth gave way without warning. Emergency rescue teams, backed by sniffer dogs and heavy excavators, rushed to the remote pass as continuous debris slides hampered operations. Police closed access roads miles in both directions to prevent further traffic from entering the danger zone.

Rescue workers cut through tangled metal guardrails and scooped away mud to reach the trapped cars buried beneath tons of debris. Hydraulic spreaders pried open crushed doors to extract the occupants from the passenger compartments. Medical helicopters landed on the cleared asphalt moments later to airlift the injured drivers to regional trauma centers. Prefectural road bureaus confirmed that structural retaining walls along the pass had undergone routine checks earlier this year. Geologists warned that the terrain remains dangerously unstable as rain continues to fall across the ridge.

"The sheer volume of saturated topsoil overwhelmed our roadside drainage culverts, triggering a sudden slope failure that caught passing vehicles with zero advance warning," a prefectural civil engineering director stated at the site.

Crews installed temporary diversion channels to direct secondary mudflows away from the active rescue sector. Heavy transport trucks carrying emergency clearing equipment arrived from neighboring prefectures to assist with the excavation. Regional authorities urged residents to avoid non-essential mountain travel while storm warnings remain in effect. Engineers plan to conduct drone surveys at first light to assess the upper ridge stability before full reconstruction begins.
