Germany Train Attack: Fatal Stabbing Incident on Munich Commuter Train Kills One, Suspect Detained

Munich, Germany— A fatal stabbing aboard a commuter train in Munich left one passenger dead on October 20 and led to the immediate apprehension of the assailant by police after the train was stopped.

The attack happened at around 7:45 p.m. on an S-Bahn train traveling between Munich-Pasing and Munich Central Station. The train was moderately crowded with evening commuters. Witnesses said a man pulled a knife and attacked another passenger without warning. Passengers pressed the emergency brake. The train stopped between stations. People fled to other carriages.

One man, aged 42, suffered severe stab wounds to the chest and neck. Paramedics attempted resuscitation on the platform after the train reached Hackerbrücke station. He died at the scene. Police said the victim and attacker did not know each other. No other passengers were physically injured, though several were treated for shock.

The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was detained by police on the platform. He did not resist. A knife was recovered. Police said the man has a prior criminal record for assault and is known to have mental health issues. His nationality has not been released. Investigators said there is no indication of a political or extremist motive, but the inquiry is ongoing.

Munich police and federal police sealed the train and the station for more than two hours. Forensic teams examined the carriage. The S-Bahn line was suspended in both directions, causing delays for thousands. Commuters were redirected to buses. A police spokesperson said, "The train carriage is a crime scene. We need to document everything."

Train attacks, while rare in Germany, have heightened public anxiety in recent years. In 2021 and 2023, similar knife attacks occurred on regional trains in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia. The federal government has increased police presence on public transport and introduced random bag checks at major stations, measures criticized by civil liberties groups.

The Bavarian Interior Minister said he was briefed on the attack and that security on public transport will be reviewed. The German Train Drivers' Union said staff need better protection and faster emergency communication systems. A union representative said drivers often learn about attacks from passengers, not from control centers.

The victim's family has been notified. The suspect remains in custody and is expected to appear before a judge on October 21. Prosecutors will decide whether to seek charges of murder or manslaughter.

The train has been removed for forensic examination. Service has resumed with delays.
