August Hanning, who led Germany’s foreign intelligence service from 1998 to 2005, was ordered held in pretrial detention on Wednesday after his arrest a day earlier. Prosecutors suspect him of treasonous espionage and related offenses. His former aide, identified as Manfred D., was also arrested and is accused of supplying Hanning with around 2,000 classified documents between 2010 and 2022. Authorities have not identified the alleged foreign recipients. Hanning’s lawyer denies that he passed information to anyone or acted against Germany’s interests
