Germany Says US Troop Withdrawal 'Foreseeable' as NATO Seeks Clarification

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius declared that the US withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany was "foreseeable," a statement made as NATO expressed the need for clarification on the matter. The US currently maintains over 36,000 active duty troops in Germany, making it the largest deployment in Europe.

Pistorius emphasized the importance of American presence in Europe, stating it is crucial for both Germany and the US. Meanwhile, NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart confirmed the alliance's efforts to understand the specifics of the US decision.

The announcement came in the wake of comments made by US President Donald Trump, who criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after Merz claimed the US had been humiliated by Iranian negotiators amidst ongoing conflicts. Trump's comments included suggestions to withdraw troops from not only Germany but also Italy and Spain.

Concerns are growing within the 32-member NATO alliance that this troop withdrawal could weaken the organization. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk remarked that the greatest threat to the transatlantic community is not external enemies but the "ongoing disintegration of our alliance." He called for unity in reversing this "disastrous trend."

Two senior lawmakers in the Republican party expressed their worries about maintaining a strong deterrent in Europe, asserting that withdrawing forces could compromise US interests on the continent.

NATO's Hart emphasized that the US decision further underlines the necessity for European nations to invest more in defence and assume a greater share of collective security responsibilities.

Germany, under Chancellor Merz's leadership, is projected to significantly increase its defence spending to reach €105.8 billion by 2027, rising to 3.1% of GDP when factoring in additional defence-related expenditures. This represents a notable increase, as Germany has historically fallen below NATO's target of 2% of GDP for military spending.

In recent commentary, Merz expressed concerns about the US's lack of strategic engagement concerning Iran, implying that it has led to the current geopolitical imbalance. This spurred Trump to respond aggressively on social media, framing Merz's statements as misguided.

The Pentagon has indicated that the troop withdrawal is expected to be completed within the next six to twelve months, marking a significant shift in US military focus from Europe to the Indo-Pacific region.

The ongoing situation continues to raise alarms regarding the transatlantic alliance's stability and future military cooperation.
