Germany Charges Alleged IRGC Agent Over Plots Against Jewish Figures

On May 21, 2026, German authorities announced that a Danish national, identified only as Ali S., has been charged for his involvement in a plot orchestrated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He was allegedly tasked with gathering intelligence on several Jewish figures in Germany, including Josef Schuster, the president of the Central Council of Jews, and Volker Beck, a former lawmaker and head of the German-Israeli Society.

Ali S. was arrested in Denmark in June 2025, while an alleged accomplice, Tawab M., an Afghan national, was taken into custody in November of the same year. Both are facing serious charges, including espionage and attempted participation in murder. Prosecutors assert that Ali S. maintained contact with the IRGC’s Quds Force, a division specializing in overseas operations.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Ali S. had scouted potential locations for attacks and had made plans to recruit accomplices to carry out the plot. Among his objectives were two Jewish grocer shops in Berlin, which were identified for possible arson attacks. By May 2025, he was reportedly in communication with Tawab M., who indicated he was ready to procure a weapon for a third individual intended to carry out an attack on Beck.

In light of these developments, the German-Israeli Society has called for the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador and sanctions against Iranian-linked financial institutions in Germany. Beck has expressed his conviction that threats to Jewish life in Germany from the Iranian regime will not go unpunished.

The Iranian authorities have denied the allegations, deeming them "unfounded," and maintain that the charges are part of a broader narrative aimed at discrediting Iran's actions in Europe. As tensions rise due to these alleged plots, many in Europe have voiced concerns regarding safety and security for Jewish communities amid growing antisemitism linked to international conflicts.

This case is part of a worrying trend where Iranian-backed operations appear to target Jewish and Israeli interests, raising the stakes for communal safety across Europe.
