LONDON — A 15-year-old German player was disqualified from Wimbledon’s junior tournament after she angrily threw her racket on the grass and it bounced into the stands, the All England Club confirmed Sunday.
The incident involved Ida Wobker during a girls’ singles first-round match against Romania’s Maria Valentina Pop. It happened toward the end of the second set on Saturday, after Pop won the first set 6-0 and the second was locked at 5-5. Wobker missed a backhand long and lost her cool, throwing the racket toward the court. It bounced up and into the few rows of stands at Court 11.
It was not clear whether the racket hit any spectators. Wobker walked over to the stands to retrieve her racket.
After a lengthy wait, the chair umpire announced Wobker was defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct. There is no prize money in junior tournaments, so she was not fined.
