Geopolitics in the Bullion Vault: Why Precious Metals Are Drawn to New Peaks

Geopolitics in the Bullion Vault: Why Precious Metals Are Drawn to New Peaks

In markets where geopolitics and economics increasingly overlap, precious metals have once again become a barometer of broader global tension, not just simple commodities. As gold and silver continue to surge in early 2026 — with both hitting record levels and investor attention sharply focused on supply dynamics — some market participants are sounding extraordinarily bullish forecasts. A growing refrain among certain analysts and strategists is that “resource nationalism” — geopolitical competition and export restrictions on critical materials — could help push gold toward $5,000 per ounce and silver toward $100 per ounce during the year.

The sharp climb in precious metals prices has roots in multiple intertwined drivers. By mid-January 2026, spot gold had risen to new highs around $4,639 an ounce, driven by investor demand amid geopolitical uncertainty and expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Silver has also broken major thresholds — rising above $90 per ounce — as both industrial demand and safe-haven flows strengthen.

Investors who point to resource nationalism argue that export controls and strategic moves by governments are tightening physical supplies of key metals. Daniel Casali, a partner in investment strategy at Evelyn Partners, notes that tensions over trade and tariffs — especially between the U.S. and China — have prompted export restrictions on rare earths and other metals, including silver. Reduced outbound flows of these materials, especially to major industrial hubs, can intensify scarcity in Western markets and exert upward price pressure.

Bullish voices see this structural backdrop — combined with continued global uncertainty — as a catalyst for even larger price milestones. Ned Naylor-Leyland, an investment manager at Jupiter Asset Management, told CNBC that it was “absolutely” possible for gold to reach $5,000 and for silver to surpass $100 this year, given current trends and supply constraints. He highlighted particularly tight physical silver availability, with premiums in some eastern markets indicating diverging regional inventories.

However, not all forecasts are as extreme. Broader institutional models and analyst projections — including from major banks like HSBC, ANZ and Goldman Sachs — suggest significant upside potential for gold over the medium term and a supportive environment for silver, though they stop short of committing to those exact milestone prices. For example, HSBC has forecast gold potentially trading up to around $5,000 in the first half of 2026, driven by geopolitics and global debt concerns, even as short-term volatility remains a risk.

The conversation about pricing extremes reflects both real structural forces and speculative sentiment. While some investors embrace these lofty targets as plausible outcomes of tightening supplies and elevated industrial demand, others caution that pushbacks — such as currency movements, shifts in monetary policy, or easing geopolitical tensions — could temper prices before they reach those heights. Nevertheless, even if gold and silver fall short of the most dramatic projections, the current price environment underscores the renewed role precious metals play as both hedges and strategic assets in a world of political friction and market uncertainty.
