Gaza City, Palestine— Four civilians were killed on Friday when an air strike hit a residential neighborhood in Gaza, reducing several homes to rubble.
The strike came in the afternoon. Witnesses said fighter jets were heard overhead seconds before impact. A row of houses collapsed. Smoke rose over the block for more than an hour.
Rescue crews arrived within minutes. They pulled bodies from under concrete with bare hands and shovels. Neighbors formed a chain to move debris. Four deaths were confirmed at the scene.
"The house was full, families were inside, there was no warning," a local man who lives two doors down said. "We found children under the rubble. We carried them out ourselves."
Medical staff at the nearby hospital said the victims included women and children. Several others were treated for injuries and shock. The death toll was confirmed by health officials in Gaza.
Al Jazeera reported the strike hit a densely populated area with no visible military presence. The network said its footage showed destroyed homes and residents searching through wreckage. No immediate comment was issued by the Israeli military on the specific strike.
The neighborhood had been sheltering displaced families from other parts of the Strip. Residents said they had moved there thinking it was safer. Power was already out before the strike.
Civil defense teams said heavy equipment could not reach the area quickly due to damaged roads. Rescue work continued into the evening by flashlight.
The rubble is still being searched. Officials said the number of dead may rise.
