Madrid, Spain— Five bystanders were injured when a gas leak inside a commercial kitchen exploded and destroyed a storefront on a busy street on October 21, 2025.
The blast hit at 1:20 p.m., at the height of lunch service. The restaurant was prepping for the afternoon rush. Staff smelled gas near the fryers and opened a back door. Seconds later the kitchen filled with vapor and ignited. The front windows blew out onto the sidewalk.
A couple eating outside was thrown from their table. Three pedestrians walking past were hit by flying glass and metal frames. The restaurant’s awning collapsed. Tables and chairs were scattered 10 meters. Smoke poured from the gutted interior.
Madrid firefighters arrived to find the storefront gone, gas still hissing from a ruptured line, and people bleeding on the pavement. They shut the main valve, hosed down the debris to prevent secondary fire, and evacuated the building above. Two upper floors have apartments.
“All we heard was a boom, then glass everywhere. People were screaming and running. The kitchen was just gone,” said Lucia Moreno, who runs a shop opposite. Her windows cracked from the pressure wave.
Emergency medical service SAMUR treated five injured on site, all bystanders, not restaurant staff. They suffered lacerations, concussions and burns. Two were listed as serious and taken to La Paz Hospital. The others were treated for cuts and released. No deaths were reported.
Gas company technicians measured high residual readings in the basement meter. Initial theory is a loose flexible connector behind a stove, possibly damaged during recent cleaning. The restaurant had passed a gas safety check in March, according to city records.
Police sealed the block for four hours. Building inspectors will assess structural damage to the facade and the apartments above. The owner of the restaurant said, “We did everything right. I don’t know what happened. My staff is in shock.”
The city has ordered safety checks of all eateries on the street. The investigation continues. The restaurant remains closed and under guard.
