Fugees Rapper Pras Reports to Prison to Begin 14-Year Sentence

Pras Michel surrendered to prison to commence his 14-year sentence after being convicted in 2023 on multiple charges, including money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). His spokesperson, Erica Dumas, described the day as "painful for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice." Despite this setback, Michel plans to contest the charges vigorously during his time in custody while his legal team asserts that his rights were violated during the trial process.

The charges stemmed from allegations that Michel funneled illegal contributions from Malaysian financier Jho Low to support then-President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. Prosecutors accused him of not only financial misconduct but also attempting to influence the U.S. to extradite a Chinese dissident in addition to obstructing investigations into Low's activities.

Michel's lawyer had previously sought a new trial, arguing that a closing statement prepared with AI by his former legal counsel reflected poorly on his defense, but this request was denied by the judge. The rapper has since been focusing on his appeal, which he filed in December 2023, claiming that the legal proceedings were flawed.

In the weeks leading up to his prison sentence, Michel reportedly spent quality time with family and even attended a concert featuring his former bandmate, Lauryn Hill, staged by Kanye West on April 3, 2026. His legal team continues to express confidence that the appeal will reveal inconsistencies and biases in his original trial.
