FSB Says It Detained German Citizen Suspected of Fighting for Kyiv

Russia’s Federal Security Service says it detained a German citizen accused of fighting for Ukraine and deserting after not receiving promised pay. The agency alleges he signed a three-year contract with Ukraine’s military in November 2025 and had previously served in the Bundeswehr. It also claims he fought in Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and eastern Ukraine. The FSB has not named him or explained how he came to be in Russia. German authorities said they were aware of the reports but did not comment on the case.
